God and Bible, Part 2

Time is irrelevant in God’s Kingdom. God was, is, and will always be. So while The Bible says Creation happened over six days, we have no idea in human terms how long one of God’s days is. Creation could’ve been six days. Or it could’ve been six million years. Maybe one day we’ll have an answer. Until then, understanding the concept is not as important as accepting it by faith.

Through the first Four Days of Creation, God spoke…And it was so. Seems God’s Voice is loud enough some people call Creation “the Big Bang”. Only the Universe, the Animal Kingdom, and man & woman were NOT spoken into being during Six Days of Creation. And only The Animal Kingdom and man & woman have the breath of life in them. But only man & woman were formed with God’s Own Hands. Of everything God made, man & woman are His Most Adored Creation…we are bigger in God’s Sight than the universe. It’s true: you & I are the BIGGEST BANG God made. Pretty cool.

So…ALL things are together in God’s Kingdom. In God’s Kingdom, man & woman, His Marriage Covenant, The Church, the Chosen People existed, exist, and will exist all at once. But in God’s Word, sequence is important. Besides, sequence is far less squirrelly than the “all at once” thing.

In God’s Word, God formed the man before He created the woman. That’s important. God gave the man the responsibility of Family Shepherd. When God brings the woman to Adam, He says she’s the reason the man leaves his father and mother and cleaves to his wife. Note that the woman does not leave her father and mother or cleave to her husband…God made the man responsible for leaving and cleaving. Then He says THEY shall Become One Flesh. Becoming One Flesh is God’s Marriage Covenant; it’s the ONLY covenant God has with mankind that was commanded into existence during Six Days of Creation.

While the man is responsible for leaving his father and mother [emotionally and physically] and cleaving to his wife, Becoming One Flesh is a dual responsibility. In the same way, God gave dominion over the earth and everything on it to man & woman TOGETHER…it follows therefore that man & woman share dominion over each other and with each other. Put another way, Becoming One Flesh is impossible without shared dominion.

In God’s Word, man & woman and His Marriage Covenant were created before The Church and the Chosen People. That’s important. In doing so, God declares to humankind that man & woman and His Marriage Covenant are more precious to Him than The Church and the Chosen People.

It follows therefore that The Church is subordinate to man & woman, husband & wife, father & mother…the role of The Church is to support and teach The Law to man & woman, husband & wife, father & mother…not to usurp the parents’ responsibility but to equip man & woman, husband & wife, father & mother. This is confirmed by Moses when he tells parents to teach the Law “diligently to your children…talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” [Deuteronomy 6:6-7]

At this point in the article, I asked my family for a conclusion. My dad posed this question: what if God did not intend for there to be religion? He’s got a point…smart dad. You see, God established The Law…it doesn’t mean He created religion. God set aside The Chosen People from all others…to create religion?, or were they chosen to perform a certain task or achieve a certain goal? God set aside The Levite tribe to serve Him in The Tabernacle…is serving God tantamount to creating religion? Or is it possible The Church and religion are the result of man exercising his free will?

There is a purpose for The Church, but that doesn’t require creating religion. The Apostle Paul gave structure to the roles of Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, Teachers, Overseers, Deacons, and Elders which suggests The Church is Biblically ordained. When I laid this notion out for a routine church-going friend, he confessed he hadn’t looked at The Church this way before and suggested the priestly class was suffering from arrogance. God thinks so too…

Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, the oracle Malachi wrote this to the priests of his day: “…the lips of the priest should guard and preserve knowledge of My Law, and the people should seek instruction from his mouth; for he is the messenger of the LORD of Hosts. But as for you, you have turned from The Way. You have caused many to stumble by your instruction. You have corrupted the Covenant of Levi, says the LORD of Hosts. So I have made you contemptible, despised, and humiliated before all the people because you have not followed My Ways…” [Malachi 2:7-9] The Message translation puts it this way: “Your teaching has messed up many lives…Everyone will be disgusted with you because you don’t live the way I told you to live, and you don’t teach My Revelation truly and impartially.”

My son offered this summary: I never thought of the church as a tool to be used BY people, instead of people being used by the church. The church should advance people’s faith. I agree with the notion that God didn’t intend for there to be religion. I think that’s part of the point of us being here — to not let our own corruption get in God’s way.

He’s got a point…smart kid.
